Royal Family News: These Royal Nannies Have Seen It All And Then Some

Royal FamilyBritish royal family news reveals that many royal children have had a devoted nanny in the background to help their parents with the myriad of chores associated with childrearing. Here are just a few of the behind the scenes helpers who have been on hand to shape the lives of the young royals.

Royal Family News – Alexandra “Tiggy” Pettifer

Alexandra Pettifer was hired as a nanny for Prince William and Prince Harry in 1993. She was often photographed with the princes as they enjoyed the great outdoors and accompanied them hunting, fishing and shooting jaunts. She played a key role in the brothers’ lives after Princess Diana died a tragic death in a Paris car crash.

Both princes were at her 1999 wedding and she was a guest at Harry’s 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle.

Royal Family News – Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo

Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo has been a nanny for William and Kate’s children since 2014.

She was trained as a nanny at the prestigious Norland College in Bath, England. There nannies learn about, “child brain development to first aid to evasive driving techniques,” according to People. Carolyn Harris, author of Raising Royalty, said, “In the past, royal nannies were employed almost entirely on the basis of referrals from the extended royal family and British aristocracy. Today, royal nannies need to strike a delicate balance between providing care and emotional support for their charge while not being seen to interfere with the decision-making of royal parents.” Maria seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Royal Family News – Olga Powell

Olga Powell was another nanny hired to care for Prince William and Harry, and like Pettifer she enjoyed a lifelong bond with her charges. She died in 2012 at the age of 82.

Before her death she was key in helping the young brothers cope with the tragic loss of their mother and before that helped them navigate their way following their parent’s acrimonious divorce.

According to People, William canceled four high-profile events in order to attend her funeral service.

“I have a very normal relationship with them,” Powell told the Hertfordshire Mercury prior to William’s 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton. She added that despite their privileged place in life, “their parents wanted them to have as ordinary a childhood as they could. If they saw a muddy puddle, they wanted to jump in it, and if there was something to climb, they wanted to climb it.”
