Royal Family News: Was The Duke Of Earl Song Written For The Royals?

Royal Family British royal family news reveals the non-negotiable truth that royals love them some titles. Lots ‘o titles. They have so many titles between and among them you might be forgiven for asking if there is a Title Mart they all shop at.

On top of that, one’s title-ness can change over time. In fact, there are several royals who could be in for title changes sooner rather than later. Doesn’t that make the monogrammed towels a rather expensive expenditure?

Royal Family News – The Royals Like Titles

Why would a title change be in the offing? It has to do with status and position changes. The English still fancy a hierarchy among themselves, and they are quite serious about knowing the difference between a Duke and an Earl. There’s even a song about it, Duke of Earl ….

Let’s take the example of Prince William. One day he will be King William. But when he married Kate Middleton ten years ago he was accorded the title Duke of Cambridge–a little gift from his grandma Queen Elizabeth.

But wait, there’s more! When William’s father Prince Charles becomes king, William will be given Charles’ current title, Prince of Wales. Some families hand down pants and shoes, the royals hand down titles!

The Royals Are Title Mad

The title craze is so rampant, that William takes on different titles depending on where he’s sleeping that night. For instance, if he’s in Scotland he is referred to as the Duke of Rothesay.

William’s wife Kate Middleton was granted the title The Duchess of Cambridge on her wedding day, which is a really big deal because she was born a commoner. I know, it’s all so Dickensian. And fittingly enough, when William becomes second in line to the throne she will also have a title change once again.

Royal Family News – Kate Middleton Was Born A Commoner

At that time she will become known hither and yon as the Princess of Wales. That title was also held by her late mother in law, Diana. Diana herself had several titles including the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Rothesay, and the Countess of Chester. Pip, pip, cheerio—sorry it just felt right in the moment.

And, when her husband William becomes king of all the land, Kate will once again have to rework her monogram, as she will be queen consort. The couple have three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. They also will have to change titles throughout their lifetimes, with George gaining the most prestigious title of all as he is tipped to be king after William. Unless the Fresh Prince of Montecito, destined to be the spare to William’s heir, succeeds in his quest to topple the monarchy.
