Royal Family News – What Happen to Prince Philip’s Titles When he Dies?

Constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne shed some light on the situation when he told Express.co.uk, “All members of the Royal Family hold domestic honorary military positions, none more so than the Duke of Edinburgh. Over many decades he amassed countless such positions, some of which he resigned when he retired from formal royal duties in 2017.”

“Upon retirement, these positions fell into desuetude until such times as they have been redistributed to other members of the Royal Family: a case in point being the Captain-General of the Royal Marines.”

MacMarthanne claims that the roles will fall out of use after Philip’s death, but may later be given to other royals.

“What positions the duke continues to hold at the time of his death will likewise fall into disuse, and will in time be offered to another member of the Royal Family to assume.”
