Chicago Med season 7 premiered on Wednesday, September 22.

Chicago Med Spoilers – Star Nick Gehlfuss Talks Season 7 Changes

When Chicago Med returned on September 22 for season 7, fans noticed two major changes.

First, NBC’s medical drama added some new faces.

And second, two beloved characters, Dr. Natalie Manning, and April Sexton, had exited.

Chicago Med star Nick Gehlfuss, who plays Dr. Will Halstead, revealed to Hello that the losses of both Natalie and April will “affect” Will in many different ways.

As a result of both women exiting, Nick feels that Will won’t succeed in avoiding “all that history.”

Looking back at the season 6 cliffhanger ending, Gehlfuss also reflected on how he lost his job after serving as Natalie’s scapegoat.

“I wasn’t surprised it happened, as Will has a history of going about things in his own way and not worrying about the rules,” pointed out the Chicago Med actor. 

“He’s been in Goodwin’s office many times!” added Nick. 

But as we’ll see in season 7, Will possesses “a great heart and always comes from a good place.”

And as an actor, Gehlfuss enjoyed the “juicy” moments in the drama of potentially leaving!

As a result of the exits of two fan favorites, Nick admitted that filming Chicago Med season 7 presented some challenges.

“In some ways it feels like we are restructuring, and it feels like we’re recreating some things,” he explained. 

And while two actors left, Chicago Med added other faces. 

“We’ve had some adjustments in the cast, losing some and gaining some,” he noted. “It’s exciting.”

To return to his character of Dr. Will Halstead, Nick viewed previous episodes. 

He also believes in the power of journaling, tracking Will’s history, “where he has been and what he has overcome and struggled with, and I like to remind myself of that.”

One meta question for all actors: Do they get to offer input on their characters’ story lines?

Nick Gehlfuss shared that he does occasionally give his views on how Chicago Med might incorporate a plot twist involving his character.

But in general, the Chicago Med actors believes in leaving the overall story line “to the writers, that’s what they do.”

However, with that note, Gehlfuss admitted he has pushed certain plot points “by reminding them of stuff we’ve covered with Will. I like to make sure we’re still pushing forward with parts they haven’t explored yet, and I will be a sounding board,” he added.

When Nick reads the Chicago Med scripts, he interacts closely with the writers.

For instance, Gehlfuss asks “what the intentions are, if it’s confusing, and if it feels similar I do bring it up and they are collaborative.”

But above all, the Chicago Med star views acting as “about staying present, and life is more beneficial when we do that as well, so I trust the writers.”
