‘Jeopardy!’ Is getting A Spinoff On Prime Video: “Pop Culture Jeopardy!”

Sony Pictures Studios is coming out with a banger spinoff series called Pop Culture Jeopardy! for their iconic game show—Jeopardy! It’s no news that we’ve long waited for this since their last Sports Jeopardy! spinoff.

Pop Culture Jeopardy! is where trivia and pop culture meet. And just like its last spinoff, Pop Culture Jeopardy! will feature different categories that cut across music, movies, Broadway, and even Gen Z stuff.

This streamer-exclusive game show will be starring Michael Davies as executive producer. And to crown it all, it will be premiering on Prime Video, as announced during Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation in New York.

What The President Of Game Shows At Sony Pictures Television Has Said About The Spinoff

The president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, Suzanne Prete, said in a release, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy! spinoff series.”

She continued, “With Michael Davies at the helm, Pop Culture Jeopardy! is going to be a nail-biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of Jeopardy! combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind…it’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike.”

In case you don’t know, this is the first time classic Jeopardy! is making it to a major streaming service.

Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD Original content and programming for Amazon Studios, further breaks it down by saying, “Pop Culture Jeopardy! is its own cultural moment, marking the first time the iconic franchise will premiere exclusively on a streaming service.”

“With a team-based approach and pop-culture focus, our global Prime Video customers will exclusively experience this innovative spin on Jeopardy! while testing their knowledge on topics that both define and transcend generations,” she added.

Executive producer Michael Davies also explained that the host has not been selected. Also, the candidates registration process has not been announced yet as the show is new and details are not yet finalized.

And if you’re also thinking about the airing date, pause on that. The official release date has not yet been announced but we feel it in our guts that it’s surely coming soon.

A Look at Jeopardy!’s Diverse Spinoffs

Jeopardy! first premiered in 1964 with more modern versions premiering in 1984. As far as this game show goes, its organizers have never been scared to go outside the box. There have been six Jeopardy! spinoffs since launch.

The first spinoff is a music-themed version called the Rock & Roll Jeopardy! This game show aired on VH1 from 1998 to 2001. Another spinoff, Jep! which is aimed at kids, aired on the Game Show Network from 1998 to 2000.

A popular spinoff premiered in 2014; the Sports Jeopardy! This spinoff focused on sports trivia and debuted on the Crackle streaming service. In 2020, we also saw Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time which came as a special event featuring past champions, and not a traditional spinoff.

There are other Jeopardy! spinoffs with varying airing dates. For instance, Jeopardy! National College Championship has aired several times since 2009, with the most recent airing in February 2023. While Celebrity Jeopardy! which features celebrity contestants for charity has a premiere date which varies by year.

Now, we await Pop Culture Jeopardy! making it the 7th Jeopardy! spinoff so far.
