Ray Donovan fans are finally getting closure. While fans are yet to get a first look into the upcoming feature-length film, Liev Schreiber shared a pic with the show’s returning casts, and it’s safe to say that they are back together for one more glorious and thrilling high-stake adventure/assignment.
The feature film will take off where the Ray Donovan season 7 cliffhanger left off – so closure is coming, and yes, fans have waited and campaigned for it.
Ray Donovan was suddenly cancelled after its seventh season, and it came with little notice to the show’s casts and writers that they were shocked when the network announced that the show won’t be renewed for the 8th time. Liev Schreiber got the show’s fans to write a petition to the network in hopes of getting them to change their mind.
Though Showtime did not change their mind about the cancellation, they did not entirely ignore the fans. On February 24, 2021, Showtime announced a feature-length film to conclude the storyline.
Production Begins For The Ray Donovan Movie
Production is currently underway in New York for the two-hour Ray Donovan movie set to premiere in 2022. The showrunner David Hollander is set to direct as well as co-write the film with the series lead actor, Liev Schreiber.
Liev Schreiber teased on Instagram that the casts are back together to shoot what is expected to be the grand finale to the iconic series.
“I will miss this particular gaggle of actors very, very much,” Schreiber captioned an onset picture that featured him and returning co-stars Kerris Dorsey (Bridget), Dash Mihok (Bunchy), Pooch Hall (Daryl) and Eddie Marsan (Terry).
Other returning cast is Jon Voight, who portrays Mickey Donovan, the father of the series titular character. Twin Peaks alum David Patrick Kelly has been confirmed to be joining the ensemble as an old friend of Mickey’s.
Following the outrage from the show’s fans, Showtime announced the premise to conclude the storyline with a two-hour format that’ll give them an ability “to work in [a] very cinematic language”.
Cancellation And Feature Film Announcement
The show’s cancellation came as a surprise to fans, the casts and most especially, the showrunner David Hollander, who never expected that Season 7 would be the show’s final season. Initially, everyone thought that season 8 would be the season finale.

“We had no indicator that the show was ending,” Hollander revealed at the time, adding that a Season 8 was definitely already in the works. “We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”
Shortly after Showtime announced the series cancellation, Schreiber gave the show’s fans a much-needed hope; the possibility of the show’s return.
“It’s hard to describe how amazing it feels to those of us in the Ray Donovan family who have been lucky enough to experience the overwhelming love and support that you all have expressed for our show since the news broke that Ray would not return,” the actor wrote on social media at the time. “What’s even more incredible is that it seems your voices have been heard. Too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your continued support, there will be more Ray Donovan. So to all the Donofans who got their bats out and beat the odds. Thank you.”
A year later, Ray Donovan’s feature film was announced. It will begin where the series ended, with Mickey on the run and Ray determined to find and stop him before he wrecks any more carnage.
Hopefully, it will be the conclusion that the fans Ray Donovan need. Check back here for more Ray Donovan movie news and updates.
