The Crown Paid Tribute To Prince Andrew’s “Disaster” Newsnight Interview

While we’re not in 2019 or near it in “The Crown’s” latest season, the show’s writers couldn’t stop themselves from making a subtle reference to Andrew’s failed 2019 Newsnight interview. Even though Charles is the royal that got the most attention in the series’ fifth season – tagged the most controversial to date – Andrew and his wife’s shenanigans in those days were also explored.

Prince Andrew’s Marriage Breakdown Explored In “The Crown’s” Fifth Season

Prince Andrew (Bill Murray), said to be her Her Maj’s favorite son, is portrayed in the movie as the son that gets preferential treatments from the Queen, whom he still calls Mummy, much to the annoyance of his elder brother Charles.

The series also contains scenes of Andrew talking to the Queen about his marriage to Sarah Ferguson, who he shares two daughters with. The marriage is shown crumbling after she was caught having her toes leaked by her Texan multi-millionaire lover John Bryan.

The Crown

In a subtle reference to Andrew’s disastrous interview with Emily Maitlis, the Prince says “And people say I put my foot in it . .. ” Andrew’s Newsnight interview has been criticized as one of the most damning interviews any public figure has ever engaged in. Originally, in Andrew’s mind, he was trying to respond to Virginia Giuffre’s allegations that he assaulted her several times when she was a minor.

Needless to say, it ricocheted real bad, and after the interview aired, Andrew announced that he would be stepping back as a senior member of the Royal Family.

At the moment, no one knows whether the series would want to explore very recent events, like Andrew’s Newsnight interview and the disgraceful way he settled his accuser Virginia Giuffre months before his mother’s Platinum Jubilee.

However, what we know is that another season of “The Crown” is upcoming and, if Season 5 has taught us anything, it’s going to be packed full of controversies.
