“The Good Doctor” has become one of the most popular medical dramas on TV. But an unexpectedly long hiatus has got fans worrying about possible cancellation. Will Freddie Highmore return as Dr. Shaun Murphy?
Find out everything to know about the future of “The Good Doctor” below. And don’t miss the spoilers for what could happen if and when the medical drama returns to ABC.
Did ABC Renew Or Cancel ‘The Good Doctor’?
Speculation about “The Good Doctor” getting cancelled began when ABC did not reveal the show’s return date. Even though episode 7 of season 5, “Expired,” left fans with unanswered questions, “The Good Doctor” has taken a hiatus mid-season, according to Newsweek. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that ABC has cancelled the medical drama.
Instead, the network has declined to give an official announcement about the date on which season 5 will continue. As a result, the future of Dr. Shaun Murphy (portrayed by Freddie Highmore) and Lea Dilallo (played by Paige Spara), along with Dr. Aaron Glassman (played by Richard Schiff), remain mysteries. ABC has even delayed titling “The Good Doctor” Season 5 Episode 8.
“The Good Doctor” probably will premiere episode 8 of season 5 in spring, with March anticipated as the soonest date. ABC has not hinted about any changes to the medical drama’s time slot, which means it may return to Monday’s show list.
‘The Good Doctor’ Spoilers – What To Expect From Season 5
“The Good Doctor” spoilers hint that episode 8 will continue from that episode 7 cliffhanger. As a result, viewers should learn more about Dr. Shaun Murphy’s emotional breakdown following the death of a baby. Sneak peeks also promise to reveal more about whether Dr. Glassman will remain at St. Bonaventure to support Shaun. And don’t forget Dr. Murphy’s relationship with Lea. Can the two reconcile after his outburst about not marrying her?

Other characters who could return to “The Good Doctor” in the spring range from Shaun’s estranged mother to Claire, pointed out TV Line. But both appearances depend on whether Dr. Murphy decides to stage a wedding and invite them as guests. And that possibility circles back to Lea. Will she risk her job and confess manipulating patient satisfaction scores?
With so many possible story arcs, more episodes might make sense for the rest of season 5 of “The Good Doctor.” But determining the number from previous seasons presents challenges. For instance, ABC aired 18 episodes of “The Good Doctor” for season 1 and season 2. In contrast, season 3 and season 4 benefited from 20 episodes each. Given the ongoing pandemic, filming for season 5 could also get interrupted.
What do you predict for the future of “The Good Doctor”? If and when it returns, do you hope that Shaun and Lea reconcile and tie the knot? Share your views with us. And then check back on our site for all the news and spoilers for “The Good Doctor”!
