Metz avoided ruining the next episode. But she did hint at what the episode that she co-wrote will reveal. Even though Toby has moved to San Francisco, Kate makes an effort to visit him. But “we’re starting to see the unraveling of their relationship,” she teased.

This Is Us has formed a tradition of devoting one episode each season to each of the Big 3 triplets. And for Chrissy, the episode devoted to Kate turned into “one of the hardest episodes that I’ve ever shot.” As a result, Metz became physically ill. “And I think it was just the beginning of the end, of course of the series, but the beginning of the end of their relationship too,” she shared about Kate and Toby.

Offering a different perspective, Chris Sullivan pointed out that marriage challenges represent “such an important part of relationships. “It doesn’t get talked about a lot and it doesn’t get handled very delicately a lot. And only [creator] Dan Fogelman and our writing staff can take the end of a marriage and still address it with compassion and love.”

But Chris also admitted that, like his co-star Chrissy Metz, he feels sad about Toby’s and Kate’s relationship problems. “We spent six years loving each other, so it’s a bummer to go out like this. But it’s also an honor to address this as well as our writing staff is,” pointed out Sullivan. And the actor feels that fans can benefit from the episode.

“We talk about it, we go back and forth all the time about whose ‘fault’ this is. And it is no one’s fault. And it is everyone’s fault. Everyone plays their part in a relationship and everyone makes their mistakes and everyone tries. Or they don’t,” summed up Chris.
