Vikings Sequel Series Will Find New Life on Netflix

Vikings Sequel Series Will Find New Life on NetflixThe Vikings sequel series is making its move from the History Channel to Netflix. This comes in lieu of the other recent fantasy and sci-fi programs that Netflix has in the works. Creator Michael Hirst will continue this story with a new series called Vikings: Valhalla. The series has become one of the longest-running scripted shows on the History Channel.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Netflix announced that it has ordered Vikings: Valhalla, a spin-off series of Vikings. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service has ordered 24 episodes of the series. It’s not clear whether those episodes will drop all at once or if it’ll be split into two, 12-episode seasons. Vikings: Valhalla will follow 100 years after the original series and will feature some of the most famous Vikings in history. These men and women will be seen fighting for their lives as they find new life in Europe.

The History Channel’s original drama is gearing up for its sixth and final season. Vikings made its debut in 2013 and told the story of Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok and his Viking brothers. As the series went on throughout the years, it focused more on Ragnar’s sons and their personal journeys. Hirst then decided to end Ragnar’s storyline in Season 4. The final season of Vikings will focus on Ragnar’s sons fighting against each other for the future of Norway.

The Netflix series won’t feature any ancestors of the characters currently in the original series. Instead, it’ll focus on more legendary Vikings. Vikings: Valhalla is currently in development, so there’s no casting news as of yet. It’ll be interesting to see how Vikings will end its storyline line in Season 6 and how it’ll influence Vikings: Valhalla. It’s expected to feature more blood, violence, action, and gore as its predecessor.

According to Channing Dungey, Vice President of Originals at Netflix, the spinoff series will have “everything that fans love” about the original series. It’s expected to have “heart-pounded, unstoppable action” and “dramatic storytelling” as it shifts its focus on a new family that’s fighting for power.

Only time will tell if this spinoff will have the lasting impact that the History series did. What are your thoughts on Vikings ending after Season 6? Will you watch Vikings: Valhalla? Share your thoughts below in the comments section.
