Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) is fighting for her life on ‘The Young and the Restless’. That’s because of four reckless decisions that were made. The first involved Nikki’s choice to drink.
Charlie (Noah Alexander Gerry) downed a few beers the night he learned that Shauna (Camryn Hamm) changed her relationship status. That’s one of the modern methods characters use to send messages to so-called significant others that they’ve discarded them (cliche, moved on). Those types of digital impersonal acts create consequences in the real world where human beings live, as Cane’s (Daniel Goddard) son learned.
Meanwhile, as that was happening, Nikki gave into her alcoholism. She, like Charlie, used her free will to take more than one drink. In Mrs. Newman’s case, she gulped free liquor at Jabot’s corporate Christmas party that was held at the Genoa City Athletic Club.
A bitter run-in with Rey (Jordi Vilasuso) triggered Nikki, who gave into her compulsion. She was last seen pulling a flask, the mark of a hardcore alcoholic, just prior to walking outside where Charlie had willfully allowed Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu) to drive his car. That would be the same Mr. Hellstrom whose father Nikki accidentally killed last April.

Both young men have learned the unseen thing they ran into wasn’t an animal, but Reed’s drunken grandmother. Dr. Hastings (Brooks Darnell) relayed the blood alcohol content fact to Reed’s mother and uncle in the waiting room at GC Memorial Hospital.
While Nikki struggles to regain consciousness, Charlie has a decision to make. He’s withheld the full story that led to his admitted hangover, merely telling Cane that Shauna broke up with him. But he must tell his dad everything.
Mistake have long been made by many residents of Genoa City. Nikki’s boozed before and rebounded because she’s resilient. Charlie’s mistakes can be chalked up to being a kid. Like Nikki, he’s deserving of compassion and a chance to earn redemption.
Charlie and Nikki, when she wakes up, need to come clean. They are good people and will take responsibility for their individual actions and the consequences they caused as this holiday-themed storyline flows on. And so too must Reed.
Nikki, Shauna, Charlie, and Reed. Their reckless choices combined to create all this.
