It seemed as if Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Chance (then-Donny Boaz) only got married so they could have kids. They barely knew each other when they decided to have children together so the next logical step was to get married. After one month of trying, Abby knew there had to be something wrong. How could she not get pregnant the second Chance sneezed on her. He’s a Chancellor and she’s a Newman-Abbott after all.

But Abby was right. While her eggs were fine, her uterus was not thanks to her last pregnancy that ended in a late-term miscarriage thanks to her disturbed little stepson, Max. That fall she took damage and no fertilized egg could implant. No problem. Chance will just give a donation, Abby would just have an egg extracted and they’d find a gestational carrier. Magic. Well, not so fast.

It turned out that Chance’s swimmers could never win a 100-meter lap. Uh-oh. What to do? Well, for Chance that meant leaving Abby a note to make a baby without him because he has to go on a super-secret government assignment.

So, that’s exactly what she did — using Devon (Bryton James) as a sperm donor and housing a little embryo in Mariah’s (Camryn Grimes) uterus. Meanwhile, Chance’s mother remained in town so Nina (Tricia Cast) could take all of Chance’s supposed lines and be the person Abby would share the pregnancy with.

As Mariah’s belly grows larger this summer, The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Abby is really going to want her husband home except she can’t even reach him and she hasn’t heard from him in ages.
