The battle between Adam and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) for custody of Christian Newman is the latest play out in this longstanding game of grudge. Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) two sons haven’t liked each other from nearly the moment when they first met, as adults, in 2008. That was when Chris Engen (Adam) first embodied this now notorious character.
Engen’s run on Y&R was brief, as Michael Muhney (Adam) took over in 2009. His electric performances of the scripts he was given, along with the terrific work of his supporting cast members, turned Adam into GC’s top villain. In effect, Adam was the new Victor.

Part of the reason why Nick despises Adam so much is that he sees the darkest elements of his father within his younger brother. However, Sharon sees the lower range of Nick exhibited whenever he is fighting Adam. That’s one reason why she’s rushed to the defense of the character Grossman is now playing.
Viewers recall that TPTB shied away from Shadam involvement when Justin Hartley (Adam) portrayed the character during a two-year stint that was widely applauded. Now, in light of the reverse SORAS twist, where Adam is approximately ten years younger than he would have been had Hartley’s edition remained on the show, Sharon has become a viable romantic partner again.

It is rather clever for Y&R to have re-positioned Chelsea with Nick (Chick) and Sharon with Adam (Shey). That creates multiple points of battle between all four characters and the pairings as noted.
As to the custody issue, Adam has skillfully caused Nick to respond in ways that shift focus away from what happened in the past. Adam can’t defend stealing Faith Newman (as now played by Alyvia Alyn Lind) from Sharon when she born, not reporting what happened to Delia Abbott (Sophie Pollono) after he convinced himself that he accidentally ran her down, or various other plot points. But provoking Nick to act like he did during the custody hearing and now, to physically attack him, works to Adam’s advantage.
Sharon has moved from sympathy for Adam to revived feelings for him. Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso) fully recognized the buttons Adam has pushed and smartly opted out of Shey.

Chelsea is arguably Adam’s deepest obsession. Sharon was Nick’s first true love. If Nick is with Chelsea, then Adam will be with the mother of two of his bother’s children.
Sharon has reverted to being Adam’s passionate defender. So, he has an ally in this first custody battle, with a second to likely follow involving Connor Newman (as most recently played by Gunner and Ryder Gadbois).
