Blue Bloods Star Will Estes Reveals What Viewers Don’t Know About Tom Selleck

Blue Bloods fans know that without lead actor Tom Selleck, the police drama wouldn’t offer the can’t-miss experience for which it’s become known. But for those viewers who think they know all about Selleck, the famous actor’s co-star Will Estes just offered a unique look at the superstar.

Find out what Estes has revealed about Tom. Plus: Discover why Will’s co-stars feel like a family. We’ve got your look at Blue Bloods behind the scenes below.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Will Estes Tells All About Tom Selleck

For Will Estes, playing Jamie on Blue Bloods sometimes feels like attending an unofficial acting school. And that’s because Tom Selleck has become a mentor for the young actor. Talking with Looper, Estes reflected on what he’s learned portraying the youngest brother in the Reagan family.

And Will gave key credit to Selleck, who plays dedicated New York police commissioner/family leader Frank Reagan. “It’s funny, Tom isn’t that different than the commissioner,” revealed Estes. Describing Selleck as both “so professional” and “so studied,” the youthful actor praised Tom for learning his character “inside and out.”

As a result, Selleck’s co-stars can depend on “working with somebody who’s very well studied and very professional and executes time and time again, every scene. You need to be on your toes when you work with him, which makes it a lot of fun.” But beyond reliably learning his lines, Selleck brings heartfelt warmth to the set, added Will. “He does a lot in small ways to architect the scenes that he’s in.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Shares What He’s Learned From Tom Selleck

As a mentor on the Blue Bloods set, Tom Selleck has provided Will Estes with several key lessons:

  • First, Tom has helped Will understand that the cast must “stay ahead of the audience. We need to make sure that we don’t tell them what we’re going to do before we do it, whenever possible.”
  • Second, Selleck has helped his younger co-star understand the importance of controlling the dialogue. For instance, Estes has learned that “certain dialogue can be trimmed if it’s expositional or it’s not getting us where we need to go or it’s not progressing the story or the character arc.”
  • And last but definitely not least, Will has discovered the importance of focus. He believes that Tom
  • “could write, produce, and direct the show, but maintains that he just wants to perform as an actor.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Cast Becomes A Family

CBS premiered Blue Bloods season 12 on October 1, 2021. And that longevity means that the cast feels like  a family, according to Will Estes. From Tom Selleck to Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Lou Cariou, that cast provides support to each other. As a result, Will constantly seeks to “soak up as much of it as I can” from his supportive, close co-stars.
