Following Grey Anatomy’s leading star and showrunner Ellen Pompeo’s revelations that there have been discussions about the possibility of ending the show, fans have been wondering if season 17 is the show’s last.

When asked if there’s still life left in the series, Giacomo told Digital Spy: “For a show that’s in its 17th, I think we’ve sort of passed [asking the question] at this point. They have created a model and a formula for making this show forever.”

The actor also pointed out that Greys highlights current events and issues that demand to be in the spotlight. “So there will never be a shortage of stories that need to be talked about,” he added.

What It Really Comes Down To

But Giacomo halted fans’ hopes to rocket high by mentioning it all boils down to the creatives. “I think there’s definitely life left. I just don’t know if the creatives want to keep making it. It comes down to Ellen, it comes down to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, the creators of the show, and the network if they really want to keep making it or if they want to make room for something new,” he explained.

A Major Grey’s Anatomy Plot Twist Involving DeLuca

(Warning: Spoilers follow)

Although the actor admitted Grey’s coming to an end is beyond his control, his character, Andrew DeLuca, exits the show with a tragic death as he was stabbed while pursuing a human trafficker.

Giacomo played DeLuca since 2015, and his character’s demise feels “cathartic” to him in some ways. He pointed out the loss the COVID-19 pandemic has caused globally. “So it’s been a year with a lot of loss, so I think for the world to see one of their beloved characters die is another way of helping them to grieve their own losses in their lives and process that,” the actor told Digital Spy.

The actor wrote:”… We did this together, and it was an honor to create along side you all. This has all been a dream I can’t stop replaying. Gratitude gratitude gratitude. That is all.”

The character has appeared many times since his death and is game for more.

With the show’s ending speculations, Giacomo affirmed: “I feel as though we have stories to tell, so that’s where I’m at with it. I don’t really listen to the speculation, because all of it is beyond my control anyway. But… I’m definitely game to keep going.”
