Grey’s Anatomy Star Kelly McCreary, 39, Is Expecting Her First Child

The 39-year-old Grey’s Anatomy actress is pregnant with her first child, and while it may have come “unexpected” to Kelly McCreary, fans are over the moon congratulating the actress and her husband Pete Chatmon.

It’s especially thrilling to Grey’s Anatomy fans because the couple met and fell in love on the set of Grey’s Anatomy.

Kelly shared the happy news that she’s about to become a first time mom on her Instagram page. The announcement was made with two sweet pictures: in the first, she’s holding a pregnancy test, and in the second, she’s standing with her husband Pete, who happily points to the “hot mama” necklace she’s wearing.

“When being late comes right on time… Surprise! WE’RE HAVING A BABY! Pete and I are thrilled to be growing our family, and to share the news with all of you!” her announcement began.

The actress, who is best known for playing Dr. Maggie Pierce in the medical drama, also thanked Clearblue, the pregnancy test brand she used, for how easy it was to use their product.

In good fun, the expecting mom also gave a shout-out to March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization aimed at protecting the health and safety of mothers and their babies, for their work toward awareness for Black maternal and infant health.

“This year, they launched an implicit bias training for more than 15,000 health care providers with the goal of uncovering institutionalized racism in the health care system and training health care workers not to perpetuate the cycles of discrimination to achieve equity for all moms and babies,” the star wrote.

The actress followed up her pregnancy announcement with a PEOPLE interview, during which she chatted about how she felt the first time she actually found out she was pregnant.

“I actually screamed in shock when I saw pregnant. I mean, I just wasn’t expecting it. I had really been mentally and emotionally preparing myself for the possibility that it might take us some time to conceive. So, I was genuinely shocked.”

In the interview, she called being pregnant empowering and grounding, saying that it would present a new type of challenge that she and her husband would have to tackle together. Despite her present excitement at having a child, she was initially hesitant about the thought of welcoming a baby into their lives, especially as there were career milestones she hoped to achieve.

“I’m very lucky to have a partner who is just rah, rah, eager for this child to come into our life and find out all of the ways that being parents will disrupt and challenge everything that we have planned. But because we are doing it together, we will be able to roll with it. And because this child is so desired and so loved, whatever happens will be the right thing, and we’ll make it work.”

The expecting couple are already planning how to make life work with the baby and the impact they want to have as parents on their children.

“My husband and I each made a shortlist of the top five things we would want to impart. And, you know, I think on the top of that list is total self-love and self-acceptance. It’s all the stuff I would tell my younger self.”

Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy started shooting a few days prior to Kelly’s pregnancy announcement, and it’s yet unclear whether the show would write her pregnancy into the series.

The new season will premiere Thursday, September 30 on ABC.
