In a recently released book titled How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, Washington shared that the show’s writer Shonda Rhimes wanted Meredith Grey to be paired with “a brain surgeon who looked like Dr. Ben Carson.”
However, it seems like Pompeo didn’t like the idea and objected to him being cast in the role. Washington explained that there’s a rumor that the idea of him being her long interest didn’t sit well with her because she had a black boyfriend.
Washington noted that Pompeo’s boyfriend had some issue with her doing love scenes with him so the actress felt uncomfortable with the idea of them being paired. Washington has nothing against the actress or her husband, Chris Ivery. The actor said he supported his co-star who was dating his Ivery at that time.
Washington ended up playing the role of Dr. Burke while McDreamy’s role went to Patrick Dempsey. The actor played the part from 2005 to 2007. He was reportedly fired from the show after using a homophobic slur during a physical altercation that took place on set.
