Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams will be switching things up a bit in the future and will be going from a stage role to the small screen. For his on-screen character’s shift, he will be leaving the hospital behind for a career in the baseball field.
He is set to play the lead role in the limited series Take Me Out, which is based on Richard Greenberg’s Tony Award-winning play that explores homophobia in baseball.
Jesse Williams – Lands Lead Role nI Richard Greenberg’s Play
Jesse Williams is best known for playing Dr. Jackson Avery on ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy for 12 years. Deadline recently confirmed that the 40-year-old actor has been cast to play a gay biracial baseball player in the limited series Take Me Out.
Take Me Out, which is set in the early 2000s, will follow the story of a mixed-race baseball star named Darren Lemming. Darren, who plays center field for fictional team the Empires, goes through challenges coming from some of his fellow teammates when he publicly reveals that he’s gay.
Jesse’s character Darren will be forced to face the hostility that comes with being a gay person of color in baseball, both on and off the field. As the Empire heads towards championship season, the team has to evaluate itself and recognize that is made up of a group of players that depend on loyalty and teamwork to be victorious.
Grey’s Star Is Also Set To Play The Role On Stage Next Spring.
Award-winning writer Greenberg will adapt his play for the TV series, with Broadway director Scott Ellis, whose works include Modern Family and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, in line to direct the pilot.
The play, which earned a Tony award and made it into the shortlist for the Pulitzer Prize, will commence its Broadway revival run in spring 2022, with Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson set to make an appearance.
Jesse Williams, who is also known for playing Joe Ryan in Little Fires Everywhere, shared that he is “incredibly honored” to play Darren in the upcoming limited series.
“The questions and challenges presented by Richard’s material are critical and seemingly boundless; cutting to the core of ‘masculinity marketing’,” he said. “What are we really, if our peace is so easily threatened by the peace of others?”
David Levine, Chief Creative Officer of Anonymous Content, the studio behind the adaptation, further noted: “We are thrilled to bring this powerful story from stage to screen, as it delves headfirst into issues that are still so salient, and given it’s set in the world of major league baseball, it’s a great study in sport and character.”
“There was never a question that Richard should be the one to adapt his play for television,” Levine added. “With his script and such an incredible team in place, many of whom are also bringing this show back to the stage, we know the series will resonate with a diverse cross-section of fans.”
