Later this year, Yellowstone fans will finally get to see season 5 part 2 and hopefully get closure. However, Kevin Costner, who plays the lead role of John Dutton, still wants to return in the last episodes of the series. However, according to sources “behind the scenes,” it might be too late.

Kevin Costner wants to complete his Yellowstone story

Yellowstone fans were devastated when Kevin Costner made a controversial exit from the popular modern Western series. However, while he was out of the show, Costner wanted inclusion in the series’ final episodes. While he hasn’t announced this publically, Puck reports that rumors were heard “behind the scenes” of Yellowstone.

Puck’s Matt Belloni explained that he heard that one of Costner’s representatives continues to ask Taylor Sheridan to bring him back to “finish his arc,” adding:

We’ll see if that happens, but Sheridan is said to be super happy with how he currently wraps up the show – without Costner – and with shooting set for this spring and summer, the clock is ticking on any reconciliation. Paramount and the reps involved declined to comment on any of this.

As fans know, Yellowstone season 5 is to be the show’s final season after Costner quit. With the final episodes airing in November 2024, there is little time to make changes.

Meanwhile, it isn’t the first time Costner reportedly tried to rejoin the show. A previous Puck report said that after the Bodyguard actor walked away from the show, his representatives reached out to the network and Taylor Sheridan. Moreover, it was said that they were “basically begging” for Costner to be allowed back on the show. However, this didn’t happen.

In the summer of 2023, Sheridan revealed some of the controversy relating to the show and Costner. He revealed that he had problems as far back as season 2. When interviewed at the time by The Hollywood Reporter, the Yellowstone boss gave his candid views on the show and its ending, saying:

There was a time in Season 2 when he was very upset and said the character wasn’t going in the direction he wanted. I said, ‘Kevin, you do remember that I told you this is essentially The Godfather on the largest ranch in Montana? Are you that surprised that the Godfather is killing people?’ What he’s clung to is [Dutton’s] commitments to his family and way of life. Dutton’s big failing is not evolving with the times – not finding different revenue streams [for the ranch].

While Costner felt season 2 was deviating from that, once season 3 was aired, they steered the show back into it. Meanwhile, Sheridan said he recalls the actor winning a Golden Globe last year for his performance, so he thinks it’s working.

Fans will finally be able to see the last episodes of Yellowstone in November this year.
