Fans of Riverdale will have to wait a bit longer before they get to watch the much-awaited fifth season of the series. The report of a shift in date was confirmed after all the shows returning for another season in the summer were given their premiere dates by the CW. Alongside season 5 of Riverdale, premiere dates for Season 2 of Stargirl, season 3 of New Mexico, season 4 of Burden Of Truth, and Roswell, were also announced.
Riverdale Season 5 Moved From Its Slated Date In July
The fifth season of the Riverdale series was earlier slated to kick off on the 7th of July, 2021, after the producers decided to go on a three months break. Well, that break is set to be extended into a fourth month as the new premiere date for season 5, episode 11 has been slated to air on the 11th of August, 2021. The producers have not come out with a reason for the extended break, but it is probably down to the global coronavirus pandemic. Though the spread of the virus has reduced to a large extent, the safety protocols put in place have still hindered the smooth filming of episodes. Apart from that, the process of post-production has also been slowed down significantly by the pandemic.
This decision to shift the premiere date for season 5 is going to have a corresponding effect on the premiere date for season 6, which has already been confirmed by producers. With the producers trying to adhere to seasons having between 16 to 22 episodes, it means that season 5 will end around the fall. So, season 6 is not likely to get a premiere date this year.
From all indications, CW is undergoing a massive re-jigging of their program schedule because of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This could be good for several shows in their first season, as well as shows with low ratings in the long run.
What Fans Hope To See In Riverdale Season 5
When season 5 gets underway, fans will be hoping to know what happened during the time jump that Archie and his crew members passed through. At the moment, no details have been given but a teasing video trailer was recently released.

Other Shows With Premiere Date Shifts
Apart from Riverdale season 5, other shows also had their premiere days shifted. Season 3 of In The Dark had its premiere date shifted from the 9th of June to the 23rd of June. No official reason was given for the shift in the scheduled date but it is most likely because of the coronavirus scourge. Season 2 of Stargirl will premiere on August 10, with season 6 of Supergirl to premiere on August 24. The premiere date for Roswell has been fixed for July 26. Fans are in for an exciting summertime as the Roswell spin-off, What We Do In The Dark, premieres on July 11.
