The Stars Of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Discuss Dramatic First Three Episodes Of Season Five

There’s a lot that needs to be said about the fifth season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and the stars have perfectly touched on the points we wish to talk about and dissect. Here’s what they think about Mei’s shocking decision and where Midge will be going next.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Stars Discuss Their Characters’ Decisions In The Final Season Of The Show

This finale is set to be an emotional farewell to the characters we have grown to know and love. The fifth season kicked off with a shot of now-Ph.D candidate Esther Maisel (Alexandra Socha) in 1981, opening up to a therapist about the complicated relationship she has with her mother, who has grown to become a successful comedienne. Esther, on the other hand, is working on a molecular kinetic sequence to figure out how to use DNA mutations to change the trajectory of disease.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Rachel Brosnahan admitted that she understands why conflict has to exist between the two women. “Midge has chosen a somewhat selfish profession. I think it’s inevitable that kids grow up to hate their parents to some degree. We only see them for a brief time, so maybe there’s still hope as we move forward that Esther and Midge may grow closer, but Esther was a weird kid, in fairness.”

The actress, who plays the titular lead character, later joked that mothers and daughters can barely make it through a lifetime without needing therapy at some point.

Another striking plot for the movie was how Alex Borstein’s Susie Meyerson reacted to the news that Midge has taken really ill after getting stuck in a snowstorm. Even though making house calls is not in the job description of a talent manager, viewers see Susie trek over to the Weissmans to check on her No. 1.

“Midge is the GOAT. Midge is the original. They came to find each other,” Borstein told THR. “It was a happy accident that we found each other, and Susie’s seen a lot of people come through the Gaslight. She’s seen a lot of acts. She’s studied comedy her whole life. And when she saw this, she knew like, ‘That’s a rare diamond … and I gotta do this.’ So, I think it was it’s more than just getting a client work or getting a percentage, it was about realizing her own dream through this person, with this person.”
