Mad About You Reboot: What the Critics Really Think

Mad About You is back and it’s getting mixed reviews. Some critics are calling the revival “unnecessary” while fans feel like the new show feels like “home.” It all started when Time magazine wrote a scathing review about the Mad About You reboot. It questioned whether there was a need for a reboot in the first place. It’s definitely not one of those sitcoms from the 90s that everyone still talks about to this day like Friends and Will & Grace.

Mad About You never had the fanfare that these two shows had. Even Seinfeld, a famous show that was about nothing, is still a cult classic to this day. Mad About You was one of NBC’s other comedies that was set in whitewashed upper Manhattan, but never had the dedicated fanbase that these other comedies did. But that didn’t stop a Mad About You reboot from happening. It has returned as a limited series from Spectrum Originals, according to the Time report.

The new episodes will be released on Nov. 20 and Dec. 18, and features Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) on the day that their daughter Mabel (Abby Quinn) goes off to college. Somehow, her dorm is just five blocks away from their apartment since she’s attending New York University. That doesn’t mean the Buchmans still don’t miss her though.

So, is Mad About You worth watching? If you were a fan of the original series, then you might like this reboot. But if you don’t have Spectrum, then you won’t be missing out on much. Spectrum is an on-demand channel that you can only get through Spectrum themselves. So, that means it won’t be appearing on NBC anytime soon. You can’t even find Mad About You on NBC’s upcoming streaming platform, Peacock. That’s kind of what makes this reboot so “unnecessary,” according to critics.

But NPR argues that the reboot feels “comfortably familiar.” Some fans agree and feel that the new episodes feel like “home,” according to Meaww.com. But not all fans are happy with the new show. One fan felt that it was “shoved” down their throat. Another fan called Jamie Buchman “the most unlikeable person in the room.” Ouch.

The first six episodes of the Mad About You reboot is now available for streaming on Spectrum’s On-Demand platform. The new six episodes will be released on Dec. 18.
