This Is Us season 4 returns with the back half in January 2020. What can fans expect when the NBC TV show airs new episodes? During an interview, executive producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker discuss young Kate Pearson’s (Hannah Zeile) troubling relationship with “boyfriend” Marc (Austin Abrams). It is teased that there is definitely something ominous looming.

Meeting Teen Kate Pearson’s ‘Boyfriend’

In the first half of season 4, we met Marc, who introduced himself to the Pearson family as Kate’s boyfriend. It was awkward, especially since he just showed up at her house. It turns out she didn’t even give him her address. He found out where she lived by snooping in employee records.

This was a major red flag and Kate definitely looked uneasy around the young man. In fact, Berger told Entertainment Weekly that people should be concerned about Marc.

“That will definitely prove to be symbolic of Marc’s larger personality. He’s obviously somebody that goes for what he wants and feels entitled to show up to a place even when he’s not invited.”

There were also other indications that Marc wasn’t a good guy for Kate to be around. It has viewers wondering if he was abusive or what exactly happened. It seems we will soon find out.

Serious Emotional Wounds

This Is Us season 4 spoilers suggest that at 39 years old, Kate Pearson (Chrissy Metz) is still traumatized by what Marc did to her a teenager. She is high-functioning and appears to have escaped the relationship “somewhat unscathed in the long run.” However, the executive producer indicated that the romance left serious emotional wounds.

Ever since Marc’s first appearance, fans have been concerned about young Kate. As a teenager, this is her first relationship. Was he abusive? A stalker? What were his intentions and how has Kate dealt with it throughout the years? What exactly was the breaking point for the Pearson daughter? Aptaker teased that viewers are correct in not trusting the boy.

“Fans should have a healthy amount of concern. I mean, there’s something ominous looming there.”

The Problem with Marc

During one episode, Kate and her mother, Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) discussed the Marc incident. They divulged no details, but Rebecca said she wanted to believe that the children were happy and didn’t see “it” coming. Kate responded that she didn’t see it either.

Creator Dan Fogelman gave some insight into Marc and Kate’s relationship during an interview with People. He said there will be answers as to what formed Kate during her teenage years and Marc is a big part of that. Kate was young and vulnerable after losing the most important person in her life — her father.

Then the first relationship she gets involved in is Marc. What exactly happened and how it affected Kate is a story that will be told.
