Prior to their split in June 2022, the Latin artist and the footballer have dated for over a decade and welcomed two sons, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.

Announcing their split at the time was extremely nerve-racking for the star, 46, that her father rushed over to be by her side. This is the part where life plays the cruelest tricks on us because the mental pressure was exacerbated when her father suffered a tragic accident.

Speaking to People en Español in a recent interview, she recalled how miserable she felt after her father’s fall. “He went to Barcelona to console me after I was consumed with sadness because of my separation,” she recalled. “While he was at Milan’s first communion, he was gravely injured in an accident. Everything happened at once.”

As anyone can imagine, it was not easy tackling two different cruel twists of fate at the same time, and it got so hard that, at one point, she feared whether she was going to survive the challenges.

“The man I have loved the most in my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most. I couldn’t talk to him, or go to my best friend for the advice I needed so much,” she said.

Thankfully, her father is healing, and while it’s a slow process, she praised him for being a “wonderful man and an endearing character who surprises us all with his strength.”

Shakira – On Learning To Live Without Men

In June 2022, a representative for Shakira revealed that she and Pique have split. “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding,” the singer’s statement said.

Months later, rumors started circulating that Piqué cheated on her with his now-girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, in August 2022.

Since then, Shakira has been vocal about prioritizing herself and her boys. She also revealed that she left the relationship with a new sense of purpose.

“I’ve always been very emotionally dependent [on men] – I have to confess this. I was in love with love,” she admitted during an interview with En Punto con Enrique Acevedo on 28 February. “One way or another, I’ve managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I’ll be fine on my own. When a woman has to face [hardships] in life, she comes out stronger. When you come out stronger it means you’re learning to recognize your weaknesses and accept your vulnerability.”
