Kyle Viljoen just experienced a terrifying health scare that lasted for a full week. And the Below Deck Mediterranean star, 31, shared that he learned he suffered from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS). But Kyle didn’t learn his diagnosis of the “rare, serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes” until he experienced throat pain and blisters that covered his entire body. “After starting a new medication I begin to feel generally unwell,” Viljoen shared via People.
And he soon discovered that “the battle I was going to face was the most painful and traumatic bodily experience of my life.” The pain that began in his throat “spread to my mouth, lips, hands and feet. Wednesday-Thursday I suffered from worsening blisters, inability to tolerate swallowing, tongue swelling, and change in vision,” Kyle added.
However, as the Below Deck star became worse, his fiancé, Dr. Zachary Riley, “rushed me to NYU ER.” And after a variety of doctors tried to ease his pain, Kyle finally learned his diagnosis of SJS. This medical emergency typically results from a reaction to a medication.
And as he starts to recover, the Below Deck star shared that he feels “over the moon with optimism and hope. With an impeccable medical staff, a loving fiancé, and support of friends and family I am working towards making a full recovery,” he told his Instagram followers.
