Jada Pinkett Smith split years ago from Will Smith. But the two hid their separation from the public.

However, when the actress, 52, watched her estranged hubby slap Chris Rock at the Oscars, she decided to stay in the marriage, according to the Daily Mail.

But Jada claimed that she and Will, 55, agreed mutually that they will now focus on a “non-traditional relationship.” And she recalled how that Oscars scandal changed her mind.

“I knew it was going to be an intense reaction. And that was the moment that I decided that I was going to stay by his side. ‘You know, it’s funny how intense situations can amplify love, and it was a pretty difficult time, but it definitely drew us closer. So yeah, it’s, crazy how things work.”

And the actress claimed that she and Will feel that they will work on “a relationship that fits what we desire.” But Jada also looked back at their journey to that decision.

“And so, we had our separation,” she recalled of their secret split six years ago. But then came the scandal she never anticipated. “And then the Oscars came and we are definitely on a different trajectory. But I will not say that it’s in a traditional way, for sure. We decided to be together in a way that works for us.”

However, Jada admitted that when she watched Will walk up to the stage, she never thought “in a million years he’s getting up on stage and it has anything to do with me! That’s when your relationship gets deeper than romance or all the c**p that comes with marriage.”

And Jada recalled, “I was just really concerned about Will. And I realized in that moment that, as challenging as our relationship can be, I’m always going to be by his side, no matter what.”

As for how the separation impacted their relationship, Jada shared that she feels it feels like an educational process. And she explained, “Us pulling at each other to love each other so that we could feel a certain way about ourselves, to then separate and find our emotional independence, to then meet each other in the middle. Learning how to show up for ourselves is showing up for the other person. It’s been a deep learning process in how to love.”

However, the actress doesn’t want to use “conventional terms like marriage. Because people have a very specific idea of it,” she pointed out. “And I’m not in the business of trying to change that. I like spending time with me and I like spending time with my family and that’s it. I have no desire to do anything else but that.”
