This week, King Charles got a very different reception from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who made their first public appearance since they returned to the UK. hey were cheered in Nottingham while Charles and Queen Camilla found themselves at the center of a protest in Wales. Read on for more details.
A Warm Welcome for Harry
Associated Press reported that on Thursday, Harry and his wife visited some charities in Nottingham and “the Duke and Duchess of Sussex received a warm welcome and cheers, especially from the schoolchildren present.”
Apparently, it was a nice welcome from attendees and their families who appreciated their gestures of affection for the people of the UK. Meanwhile, over in Wales, things were not warm and fuzzy.
Protests In Wales
Per Nation.Cymru, the protests in Wales were organized by the Socialist Republican movement. The organization said:
It is farcical to think that the opening of the Senedd should be attended by a man who holds the honest belief that he has the right to rule over the people of Wales just by virtue of being born into the right family; this is archaic and has no place in modern Welsh society.
They also objected to the Crown Estate, saying it owns “the vast wealth of our coastlines, and we demand that the Crown Estate be nationalised to the people of Wales.”

King Charles went there to attend the opening of the seventh Senedd (Welsh Parliament) in Cardiff, Wales. Per the BBC, it was the first time that the monarch visited the Welsh Parliament since 2024.
Viewers React
When DWS News shared about the protest on YouTube, plenty of people weighed in. One viewer wrote, “Not my king as well as not my queen. Tough luck.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- “All this fanfare is old fashioned & out of date. Get rid of the royals – they’re s (sic) waste of space & money!”
- “Always get the vocal minority turning up.”
- “Never my queen.”
- “Not my king – good you can have Trump … I lived in England, they never stop complaining – they love to be miserable.”
Previous Protests
It’s not the first time that protesters chanted “Not My King,” and back in 2023, we reported that there had been a number of “Not My King” protests in the UK.
At the time, anti-monarchist leader Graham Smith, commenting on the protests, said, “It has galvanized people. We will look to ramp up protests this year.”
There were also some security concerns when Princess Catherine and the children were on their way to Trooping the Colour. Catherine was booed and some protesters approached the carriage.
