Angelina Jolie, 46, and Salma Hayek, 55, have been in the acting business for many years and have appeared in action movies, romantic movies, sci-fi and so forth, but there’s one thing that these two trend-setting stars were yet to do – which they finally agreed to do for Marvel’s “Eternals” franchise.
Let’s be honest, these two ladies are ready to kick some ass and take a few names while they’re at it, but we’re curious, why would they want to star in Marvel’s “Eternals”?
Fortunately, they’re willing to share that particular bit of info with everybody. Read on to find out.
Angelina Jolie Calls Marvel’s Eternals A “Diverse Family”
Marvel’s “Eternals” is ready to make history by debuting MCU’s first deaf superhero. The level of diversity in the film is almost out of this world.
Created by Jack in 1975, the “Eternals” have been a part of the Marvel universe ever since. The film is now making their first-ever live-action debut and they’re looking to make a giant splash by dragging in two of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Angelina Jolie plays Thena, while Salma Hayek plays Ajak, two members of the original “Eternals”, made by the Celestials to protect and guide humanity on Earth.
Jolie is Still Goin Strong
Jolie’s success in Hollywood has spanned decades and she doesn’t look like she’ll be slowing down anytime soon. She has starred in blockbuster movies such as 2001 “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”, 2014 “Maleficent”, 2005 “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, and many others.
For the first time, Jolie, along with Hayek, is dipping her toes into the superhero genre.
For Jolie, even though she has tackled complex and strong female characters – such as the videogame adaptation of “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” – the allure of Thena is that she’s involved in a fight bigger than herself.
Jolie admitted that she’s been offered to play superhero parts in the past, but it wasn’t until Thena came along that she really considered the possibility of stepping into the shoes of a larger-than-life character.
“And Thena… It was really this family I wanted to be a part of. When I understood what this film was going to be and who this group was, what this group would represent and how inclusive and diverse [it was], I felt that’s what it always should have been. It’s what I wanted to be, and to figure out my part in it was secondary; figuring out who I’d be. But I just wanted to be with this family. And I trust this director.”
Salma Hayek Describes Her Joy Getting to Play a Superhero in Her 50s
For Hayek, who hasn’t been offered a superhero role before, becoming Ajak felt like it happened at the right moment and the character felt like “the right one”.
Like Angelina, Hayek opened up about her confidence in director Chloé Zhao and the “eclectic” family she has created with the film, adding, “I love the director. I think it’s very meaningful that it’s at this time, that I can be in my 50s and be a superhero, and be Mexican-Arab and be a superhero, and be part of this eclectic family.”
When Hayek signed on to star in the movie, the only other person who had joined the film at the time was Angelina Jolie, which made her very excited.
“Because my greatest expectations about Angie, about the director, about our little family that we created, about the movie itself – it’s one of those rare occasions where you keep being surprised in a good way, and it keeps growing.”
Hayek continued: “For example, we couldn’t come out when we wanted to, because the world practically fell apart with a virus. Everything has been eventful about this movie, though. There is not nothing that is just normal. It’s just all kind of amazing.”
Hayak Has Been Staying Busy
Hayek’s recent projects include “The Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Wife” which stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, and she has a role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming biopic “House of Gucci”.

Jolie’s last acting work was in Taylor Sheridan’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead”, which was released in theaters and on HBO Max this past May.
Jolie has also made a name for herself as a director with such movies as 2014’s “Unbroken” and 2017 biographical drama “First They Killed My Father” for Netflix.
Both Jolie and Hayek have tackled characters in multiple genres and exceeded expectations with their wonderful performances. I’m pretty safe to say their performance in the upcoming “Eternals” will not disappoint.
