Hollywood is yet recovering from the dual actors and writers strikes and another segment of it is preparing to push the strike button. If things aren’t resolved to the satisfaction of the talents represented, well, it’ll be another merry-go-round in Hollywood this summer.
Hollywood Crew Union IATSE On the Verge Of Launching A Strike Authorization Vote
The Hollywood Reporter disclosed earlier this week that if two major deals aren’t reached by July 31, Hollywood crew union IATSE could possibly start planning a strike authorization vote.
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees is a union that represents entertainment workers behind the scenes, working in live events, motion picture and television production, broadcast, trade shows, and more throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The union has already launched two new contract campaign websites for Basic Agreement and Area Standards Agreement talks.
The official statement reads: “Negotiating Committee is not interested in extending this agreement beyond the July 31 expiration. Depending on the status of negotiations around this time, there will either be a strike authorization vote or a ratification vote.”
The reason why the union probably doesn’t want an extension is that two of these same contracts were originally drawn up in 2021, but talks kept being extended several times.
A tentative agreement was reached just as the deal was set to expire, leading 98 percent of the union to vote strike at the time, but it sadly never happened.
“We are not afraid to strike,” the President of the Brotherhood of the Teamstars Sean O’Brien said.
“If these greedy corporations — whether it’s Amazon, Netflix, Sony… Disney — if they choose not to reward our members, they are putting themselves on strike. We will put them on their back, on their knees, begging for mercy.”
One of the issues raised was how AI is displacing most of their members and how studios are getting to work with fewer people, depriving many of their members from work.
While studios and streamers reached a tentative agreement with the International Cinematographers Guild for craft-specific issues on Wednesday, March 20, the remainder of the West Coast Studio Locals need to reach a deal by the deadline for a strike to be completely avoided.
