George Miller Talks Feud Between Charlize Theron And Tom Hardy

Okay, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s differences actually led to a lot of uncomfortable situations on the set of ‘Fury Road’ and, even though they both delivered great performances for the movie, director George Miller still doesn’t think there’s an excuse for it.

For all those who have ever wondered what caused the famous rift between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, George Miller’s here with some answers.

During his recent interview with The Telegraph, the ‘Mad Max’ director decided to share some insight into what went down to cause the well-documented feud between ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. From his perspective, the whole thing was a “disruption” and “there’s no excuse for it.”

“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined—a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance—and always the first one on set.”

At first, Miller chose to see their clashes as a good thing that may affect their characters’ stories in a positive way. “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival,” said Miller.

But the negative aspect of their battle far outpaced the positives Miller wanted to see at from the start.

You see, while they were quarrelling and making life miserable for each other, they were also doing it to those they were working with, and worse, their fights derailed production.

“There’s no excuse for it,” he told The Telegraph. “I think there’s a tendency in this business to use great performances as an excuse for other disruption that could be avoided.”

What Charlize Theron Has Said About Her Famous Feud With Tom Hardy

During that time, the tension got so out of hand that veteran producer Denise Di Novi was brought in to act as a mediator for the stars. It was something Theron later said helped her immensely in getting through the movie and feeling better about being on set.

“That’s where we could have done better, if George trusted that nobody was going to come and fuck with his vision but was just going to come and help mediate situations,” said Theron.

“I think he didn’t want any interference, and there were several weeks on that movie where I wouldn’t know what was going to come my way, and that’s not necessarily a nice thing to feel when you’re on your job. It was a little bit like walking on thin ice.”
