The story of the infamous Oscars slap is back on our doorstep, this time, Will Smith directly apologizes to Chris Rock, and also explains why he slapped Chris that day.
Allow me to take you down memory lane a little. On Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Oscars 94 Annual Academy Award, Chris Rock was called up to deliver a speech and also give the “Best Actor” award to Smith for his role in King Richard. When Rock came up, he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s bald hair saying “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right?” Everyone present laughed at the joke except Jada who didn’t find it funny because her shaved hair was as a result of a medical condition she has.
When Smith saw that his wife wasn’t laughing, he walked up to Rock and delivered a sounding slap to Rock while screaming “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.” Smith, after going on to win the Best Actor award that same night, did not apologize to Rock for the slap.
Will Smith’s – Direct Apology To Chris Rock
The Gemini Man actor, 53, made a video which he posted both on his Facebook page, and Youtube on Friday, the video was captioned “Been a minute.” In the video, Smith said he has given a lot of thought to what he did at the Oscars and, also replied to the question of why he didn’t apologize to Rock at the Oscars, Smith explained that he did reach out to Rock so that he can directly apologize to Rock for Smith’s behavior at the Oscars but he was told that Rock is not yet ready to talk but will reach out to Smith when he is ready.
Smith said, “So, I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you, my behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.” Smith went on to acknowledge that he handled the situation wrongly, Smith also took the liberty of explaining that, the general speculation that it was due to Jada’s reaction to Rock’s joke that prompted him to slap Rock, that Jada didn’t instruct him to do so. Smith said, “I made a choice on my own from my own experiences and my history with Chris. Jada had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry, babe.”
Next, Smith apologized to his family, the Academy Award, and Questlove for stealing their moment. He recognized that it was Questlove’s vote that made him win the Best Actor award that night. Rounding up the clip, Smith said he is sorry for his actions, “I am deeply remorseful, and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. I’m human, and I made a mistake, and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of s—.” He went on to apologize for not meeting up with the image and standard people placed on him, he promised to do better.
Will Smith’s – Ten-Year Ban
A day after the Oscar slap, Smith took to his Instagram to issue a public apology to Chris Rock, and the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences for his actions, he explained that his reaction to Rock’s joke was done out of love for his wife. Four days after his public apology to Rock, on April 1, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences and said he’ll accept any punishment given for his action.
