This week, an article arrived about The Andy Griffith Show and how it premiered in 1960. Mostly, it focused on behind-the-scenes facts. However, for those who watched it, and the spin-off, it brought something else of interest. Read on to find out more.

The Show Reveals A Maturity Gap?

Parade covering cast burnout and the move to make a spinoff about Andy Griffith as the iconic Sheriff Andy Taylor, is an interesting look at history. After all, Griffith walked away from it, hoping to get offsitcoms and into big movie business. Well, that didn’t happen in a  hurry and he ate some humble pie.

However, the show, that at one time in the 60s ranked right up there in the top 5, gave some fans a chance to reflect on how times differ. Actually, thanks to Redditors, there’s a perfect example of how contributors bridge the gap between 1960s Mayberry and how folks see adulthood today.

Nostalgia & Other Insights

When an OP on the r/Exennials sub did some re-watching, it reminded folks that as Andy Taylor, Griffith was only 34 when he debuted as the sheriff.

Notably, it seemed that the observation about aging and the old sitcom made folks think about how the Mayberry spinoff made folks always think of the morality as rather old fashioned.

Modern Maturity

The Reddit thread showed that in 1960, at 34-years-old, Andy Griffith was a widower, a dad, and the moral overseer of a town. In comparison, these days, many 34-year-olds have other things on their mind, like whether to cancel Netflix or not.

Naturally, some folks wondered if the black and white cinematic mode made it seem olden-day.

In fact, the show seemed deliberately styled to feel like a bygone era. And, that seemed a bit strange, because it aired alongside a different sort of 1960s culture.

A Sort Of Nostalgia Show?

While Parade treated the show as a contemporary hit of its time, which it was, perhaps in reality it was also a sort of nostalgia trip for viewers, actors, and producers. Remember, it aired during years of impressive changes in the world.

First up, the space race started. Then, the Vietnam war raged. And yet, The Andy Griffith Show remained stuck in a time that probably predated what happened in the real world.

The debate arose because some folks felt that perhaps the show was deliberately slanted away from social change and into a simpler, responsible adulthood. While it might have suited the times, nowadays, it simply feels very strange.

So Serious, So Young

If you don’t know, Andy Griffith was only 34 years old when the show premiered. And by the time he exited, he’d turned 42. Meanwhile, Don Knotts who played the role of Barney was 36 when he started.

What struck everyone in the debate, is that both of those men seemed altogether way too grave and seriously responsible compared to modern audiences. In fact, despite a lot of humor, those viewers now feel that the duo acted as if they were already in their 50s.

Opinions In The Discussion

Really, it goes to show that social media can actually produce some interesting insights into soaps and sitcoms. One person penned:

I’m 45 and I still feel like I need Andy Taylor to tell me how to handle my life. Finding out I’m older than he was when the show ended is a mid-life crisis in a nutshell.

Here are a few other observations from the discussion:

  • It’s the suits and the hats. You put a 34-year-old in a crisp lawman uniform and a fedora today, and it looks like a costume. Andy just looked like… a man.
  • Mayberry wasn’t a place, it was a mood. It’s wild to think they were filming this while the Rolling Stones were topping the charts. Talk about two different worlds.
  • I always thought Barney was an ‘old timer’ sidekick. Turns out he was younger than most of the guys I play pickleball with.

What Do YouThink?

What are your thoughts? Do you agree that older sitcoms and soaps showed a population that seemed way more mature than modern day folks? Did they age quicker because life expectancy was shorter? Or, was it just a trend in the entertainment industry back then?
