Coronation Street Spoilers: Corrie Exec Iain MacLeod Claims Fans Want Dark Plots

Coronation Street: Iain MacLeod

Coronation Street spoilers reveal that show boss Iain MacLeod is defending the soap’s controversial plots, saying that he believes fans want to see hard-hitting, dark storylines when they tune in.

ITV’s Coronation Street debuted in 1960 and since then the show has gained a reputation for airing some of soapland’s more dark and gritty stories including multiple plots involving seriously shady behavior from bad guy Pat Phelan (Conor McIntyre) up to the current domestic violence storyline featuring Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) and Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King).

At the moment the show is on hiatus due to coronavirus precautions which have virtually locked down life on all continents. What will transpire when the show starts back up again? MacLeod says that he has no intention of backing away from difficult topics, and will incorporate coronavirus as a storyline, but that the show will also have funny and bright moments as well.

The exec promises fans that, “Coronation Street won’t stop being funny, not on my watch!”

According to MacLeod, “The virus will exist but we’d be keen for it not to dominate everyone’s lives. It’s the only conversation in my house – but people don’t want to see that as the only topic of conversation on screen.”

He goes on to say that the show will recreate some of the aspects of how the pandemic has affected everyday life such as, “handwashing and the way people behave but we will still tell dramatic storylines and a dollop of comedy as we don’t want to lose what the show is. Our storytelling is business as usual.”

Right now fans are watching a very dark plot unfold in which Geoff and Yasmeen escalate the violent behavior taking place between them. According to MacLeod, the story has made a huge impression on the audience and is one of the more impactful plots of the last few years.

He maintains that people can cope with rough and tumble stories even when “something horrible is going on in the world. In the best tradition of Corrie’s stories, there is also the optimism of overcoming adversity where the good guys win in the end.” Is he dropping a hint at how Geoff and Yasmeen’s story will end?

Iain Macleod, your storylines are the absolute worst!!!! Cannot stand Geoff & Yasmin, Asha, Steve, so many if the characters can’t put sentences together like Gemma. I am at the point to quit watching after 30 years it’s so bad.
