However, one that was particularly challenging was obviously being brain-chipped to believe he was Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo). Actor Stephen Nichols explains his initial reaction and what was going through his mind.

DOOL spoilers reveal that everyone was devastated over the death of Joseph Mascolo, who played Stefano DiMera for many decades. He was an iconic character and the actor began a legend. So, when fans heard that Stefano was “returning,” there was a lot of confusion and speculation. One was that someone would be brainwashed to think they were Stefano. As viewers recall, Steve (Stephen Nichols) turned out to be brain-chipped by Dr. Wilhelm Rolf (William Utay).

Days of Our Lives spoilers reveal that Nichols bluntly said that the most challenging part of that was living up to the legend, Joseph Mascolo. In fact, when he was first told about the storyline, he couldn’t believe his ears. He knew it was going to be tough and worked really hard to get Stefano down pat… including his mannerisms. But there was that fear of him not living up to Mascolo’s version of Stefano.

In fact, Nichols told Soap Opera Digest at the time how he prepared for such a demanding role. He watched old episodes of Stefano to get everything down. The tone he used, the accent, the way he walked, and his facial expressions. Even though Nichols was not Mascolo, we think he did a really good job playing the part.
