Wednesday Is Our New Favorite Goth Girl: Here’s How the Creators Made Her So

Wednesday is the name that’s currently been buzzing on the internet and off the internet for weeks now since it debuted to incredibly big numbers. Celebrities, including the Kardashians, have copied this grim half-dead-looking character. From her dance moves to her prom dress, she has taken pop culture by storm.

Al Gough – Reveals the Reason They Separated Wednesday From Her Family

For anyone who has watched the 2019 animated movie “The Addams Family”, we know that this peculiar girl, Wednesday, was introduced as a part of this very weird family who just want to be free from the persecution of the world.

For Al Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the hit Netflix series “Wednesday”, watching the cartoon opened their minds to how incredible the character Wednesday truly is. However, they didn’t feel that the character could shine to her full potential with her family around, so they figured a way to make her exist without her family.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Al Gough said of Wednesday, “It was a character that we all really loved, and nobody had spent a lot of time with. And it’s a character we’d only seen really as a 10-, 11-, 12-year-old, who is part of a family and would have a funny line in the scene, but we didn’t know much about her.”

He continued: “Her sort of fearlessness and her ability to always be herself with something, that was interesting, and we thought, well, “What if she was a teenage girl? And then what if you took her out of the family and put her in boarding school, which is ostensibly a new family? How would she react?”

Miles Millar – On Paying Homage To the Previous “Addams Family” Iterations

One of the reasons fans love this show so much is due to the nostalgic effect in it. The creators didn’t make us feel as if we’re watching a brand new movie with brand new characters, but rather it became a sort of an extended version of the characters’ lives.

I was particularly intrigued when Uncle Festa showed up in the movie.

“I think we definitely wanted to honor the legacy of the Addams Family,” Millar told the Hollywood Reporter. “And I think it’s something that was important that we do, and we always, always, enjoy doing as well. We think it gives a shoutout to the fans. There’s a nostalgia element to the show as well. I think we also went back to the original Charles Addams illustrations.”

“That was certainly something that we talked to Tim about, and he was a huge fan of Charles Addams growing up. Looking at his body of work, it’s so fresh, acerbic, subversive, morbid, fun. There are production design elements we literally ripped out of his panels, which we thought would be a really fun Easter egg for people who do know Charles Addams and can reference that.”

In fact, “Wednesday’s” creators went a step further by casting Christina Ricci, who some of us will remember also played a version of Wednesday a while back. So, lights camera, action, and two Wednesdays in a scene.
