Joseph Petito, the dad of the late Gabby Petito just warned his followers on social media about a scam account. Netflix made a documentary about her death that dominated the headlines in August of 2021, and Gabby’s dad does his best to make the world a safer place for young women.
The Scam Account
The news about the scam account arrived via Jospeh’s account on Instagram on Wednesday. Ironically, the unofficial account claims to be looking for information on the case of Brian Laundrie and Gabby and invites folks to send in any information.
As you can imagine, Joseph Petito is spitting mad about it. So, in his post, he wrote “SCAM” across the screenshot. Plus, he wrote a scathing caption. He said:
This account is pretending to be @petitomom . They are not they are scamming people. Please tag @zuck to help take this account down. #ScamAlert #scammers #gabbypetito
Millions Of People Followed Gabby’s Story
Gabby Petito disappeared while on a trip with Brian Laundrie. Later, he claimed that she injured herself, so he put her out of her misery. The manhunt went on for a long time, and eventually, his remains were discovered in an area that was previously underwater.

Many people rallied around to encourage the legacy of Gabby Petito, so they felt disgusted by the scam account. Sadly, some people noted that it’s been around for a while. Here are some of their comments:
- I am so sorry for your loss. I am so angry at the system that’s failed you and your family! Sending love and prayers
- Report and blocked. Thank you!
- I figured. it tried [to] follow me. I blocked it right away. R.I.P Gabby
- So messed up how someone could stoop so low!!
- I’ve had this account blocked and reported for years now I can’t believe it’s still up
- Sick to use someone’s death for your benefit. What is wrong with people!
- I reported but they say this account isn’t breaking any terms of service. I’m so sorry that @instagram doesn’t have a dialogue box so we can actually tell them this account is scamming people.
Remembering The Loss Of A Young Life
The senseless death of such an attractive young woman broke a lot of hearts. The documentary, American Murder: Gabby Petito, was described by Netflix as; “What happened in the final days of Gabby Petito’s life? In this gripping true-crime series, her loved ones reveal the untold story of her tragic murder.”
