United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas has recently stated that a new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rule could be the reason for the numerous drone sightings across the East Coast and New Jersey.
He recently addressed this issue during a press conference on the weekend, noting that they could not shoot the drones down; however, technology is helping to detect them. Mayorkas offered some insight as to why this seems to be happening, all of a sudden.
Biden Admin Drone-Sighting Explanation – New Rule Changed Things
Mayorkas explained to the press that in September 2023 the FAA changed rules so that drones could fly during the night. This could point to one of the reasons why people are seeing more of them than they did before at this time of day.
The FAA already has restrictions on operations at night. As such, most drones are not allowed to fly in the nighttime unless they have anti-collision lights on them that are seen within a minimum of three miles.
Upon all the reports of drone activity in November 2024 near Morris County, New Jersey, the FAA released temporary bans on a Bedminster, NJ golf course (owned by President-elect Donald Trump), as well as the Picatinny Arsenal Military Base. Currently, the FAA oversees the governing regulations when it comes to drones, and Congress has written some drone regulatory laws.
In 2018, a law was passed, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, where Congress allotted certain Homeland Security and Justice agencies the power to counter threats from unmanned aircraft for the safety and protection of these departments. As such, new drones must have equipment that allows law enforcement to identify the operator.
Placing Limits Could Have A “Chilling Effect”
Still, like any action, there’s always an opposite reaction. Director of Government Affairs for the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, Scott Shtofman, states that placing more limits on drones could have a ‘chilling effect’ on the ‘growing economic engine’ for the U.S.
He adds, “We would definitely oppose anything that is blindly pushing for new regulation of what are right now legal drone operations.”
Still, Mayorkas added in his process that authorities must increase for the Department of Homeland Security and its partners to ‘incapacitate’ any mystery drones. He stated over 8,000 drones fly over the U.S., daily, which includes civilian and government for both leisure and work activities.
