Last season was a dramatic one for the contestants of American Idol. Some of them accused Katy Perry of bullying them. There was uncertainty over her judge position at the time. She still returned for Season 22, which premiered on Sunday, February 18.

Katy caught controversy when one American Idol contestant reflected on her audition process. She felt that the “Teenage Dream” singer was “mom shaming” her.

Sarah Beth Liebe revealed to the judges that she was 25 years old and had three children. Katy didn’t believe her. She joked that Sarah spent a lot of her time lying down on the table.

In the March 2023 episode, Sarah performed “You Know I’m No Good” and “Benny and the Jets.” She admitted in a deleted TikTok video that she didn’t feel good about the audition process. Sarah called the audition process “embarrassing” and said that Katy’s comments were “hurtful.”

American Idol fans noticed Katy Perry’s rude behavior throughout the season. They called out her crude and cold demeanor. It was also the first season that Katy got booed during a live show. She admitted that she loved the experience. She hasn’t responded to the controversy surrounding her.

American Idol  – Making Singer More Likeable?

A new clip from the Season 22 premiere was posted on the American Idol Instagram page. The video showed Katy Perry crying after an emotional audition. McKenna Brienholt shared that she was adopted at birth. She reunited with her birth family.

The 25-year-old shared her plans to meet them after the audition. Her relatives surprised her in the emotional moment. This caused the Idol judges to tear up. The fans weren’t feeling this scene. They took to the comment section to accuse the producers of staging this moment.

“Did she really not know her birth family was going to be there? Some of these setups are hard to believe. It was touching and emotional nonetheless, but they still seem phony!” one fan noted.
