Below Deck Star Captain Lee Throws Shade At Captain Sandy!

Below Deck fan fave Captain Lee has become known for saying exactly what he thinks. And in a recent podcast, Lee lived up to that reputation by throwing shade at Below Deck Med star Captain Sandy.

Captain Lee left the Below Deck franchise recently. But the fan fave known as the Stud Of The Sea stays in touch with all the shows. And on his Salty With Captain Lee podcast, he reflected on Below Deck Med star Captain Sandy’s cast trouble amid the season 8 premiere, noted Us.

The problem stemmed from a crew member’s paperwork. And Lee clarified why the documents caused so many problems. “When you pull into a foreign port as a captain you are subject to flag state inspection — depending on what flag you are flying — by the office there. They can come onboard at any time and go through the whole vessel. Not only the personnel but the boat itself,” Lee noted.

As a result of problematic certifications, Sandy looked more closely at Below Deck cast member Ruan Irving’s documents. And Sandy then realized Ruan had given her copies rather than originals and licenses lacking certifications. But even more problematic, Sandy got a call from Port Authroity that Ruan’s Yachtmasters contained someone else’s photo. And she requested that he leave the boat until he could return with the required documentation.

But a confessional showed Captain Sandy facing a harsh reality. “You have got to be freaking kidding me. This is someone else’s picture on Ruan’s certificate,” she exclaimed. And the Below Deck Med star called the situation “major, like a whole different level. The entire vessel could be arrested because of one crew member.” And after Ruan left to try to find the documents, he called her to make his exit permanent. 

But Captain Lee felt strongly that when production reviewed the documents, Captain Sandy should have gotten involved and found the problem ahead of time. And he threw shade by declaring, “The only person who is responsible for everything that happens on that vessel is the captain. Port State Authority don’t give a s—t [if you are filming a show]. That is not putting money in their pocket. They don’t care.”

And Captain Lee bluntly asked why Sandy didn’t notice the discrepancy between the photo on the certificate and Ruan. “Why didn’t she match that when looking at his credentials? I have no idea.” And Lee noted that he always looks at “everyone’s credentials and scrutinizing anyone that gets on my boat. I am responsible and I take that seriously.” he added.

But Lee summed up the situation by declaring, “It is the captain’s responsibility. To me, it would be so embarrassing to hand over documents that I hadn’t examined first. Do I think she was trying to pull a slick one? No,” he acknowledged.

But Captain Lee added, “It doesn’t make any difference because she is ultimately responsible.” And he noted, “I am sorry she had to go through that.” However, Lee views it as a “lesson well learned” for Captain Sandy. “Trust but verify.”
