Kate prefers a quiet get-together at her home, Anmer Hall, on her birthday. Disliking “fuss or attention,” the Duchess of Cambridge likes to celebrate with her closest friends and family, said one source. And all she wants for a present? “A day off with her kids and her husband,” revealed the insider.

But Prince William decided to show his devotion in a very different way for his wife’s 40th birthday. The Duke of Cambridge crafted a secret plan to take Kate and their children to New York City. And although she loves time with her kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, Kate didn’t put taking a bite out of the Big Apple on her birthday wish list.

The Duke of Cambridge felt thrilled to tell his wife about his fabulous plans for her 40th birthday. Prince William “was so excited to tell Kate about it,” shared the insider. “He’s got all these ideas for family friendly activities, like museums and ice-skating during the day, and romantic parties for two in the hotel bar once the kids are tucked up in bed.”

But while that sounds lovely, Kate reportedly didn’t react in the way William had hoped. And the Duchess of Cambridge has one key reason for not wanting to travel to New York City. Kate reportedly fears that she’ll encounter some of her sister-in-law Meghan Markle’s friends. Such a meeting could turn into an awkward situation, given the estrangement between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the rest of the royal family.

“Kate’s reaction was one of anxiety,” summed up the insider. “Her concern is that she’ll run into her sister-in-law’s cronies.” But Prince William seems to feel no such worries. The Duke of Cambridge even reserved a suite in the swanky Carlyle Hotel, known to be the favored hotel of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as the Duchess of Sussex’s best friends on the East Coast.

“Kate feels like she’s in boarding school again, worrying if Meghan’s friends will be watching her in the common room – or in this case, the lobby,” revealed one source. “Plus, there’s always the chance that Meghan and Harry themselves would show up on a work trip, like they’ve done twice in the past few months, which would totally ruin things.”

The Duchess of Cambridge does recognize that she might seem “paranoid” about Meghan, added the insider. “But the past year of Meghan’s strange attacks on her has taken its toll. Wills is a tad miffed. He wants to make it such a special trip.”
