Royal Family News – What is In Prince Philip’s Will?

According to People, “The strongbox – which is in the care of High Court judge Sir Andrew McFarlane at the Royal Courts of Justice – holds a unique selection of royal wills dating back to Prince Francis of Teck in 1911.”

Some of the wills being tightly protected along with Philip’s are those of Prince Morris Victor Donald of Battenberg, Prince Francis Joseph Leopold Frederick of Teck and Lord Leopold Louis Mountbatten. The wills of Dowager Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Helen Frederica Augusta, Duchess of Albany and Princess Louise Victoria Alexandra Dagmar, Princess Royal are also in the lock box for safe keeping.

Among the notable wills in the lockbox are those of, “Queen Elizabeth’s mother, the late Queen Mother, her sister Princess Margaret, and her uncle the Duke of Windsor (also known as King Edward VIII), who abdicated the British throne in December 1936, McFarlane revealed Thursday.”

In September McFarlane revealed the existence of the royal lock box during a legal row over the secrecy of Prince Philip’s will. “I am now custodian of a safe in which there are over thirty envelopes, each of which purports to contain the sealed will of a deceased member of the Royal Family,” he said.

McFarlane stated that the royal family was entitled to an enhanced level of privacy, “to protect the dignity and standing of the public role of the sovereign and other close members of her family.”

If those words were meant to calm the waves, they did not. If anything, McFarlane’s statement aroused even greater curiosity as to what must not be revealed for nearly 100 years after Philip’s death.
