The Netflix show The Crown is popular, and controversial, for its dramatic portrayal of real life events. The latest installment in the series addresses the fraught relationship between Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. In the 80’s their marriage seemed the stuff of fairytale: a beautiful young bride and the man destined to be king—what could go wrong? Plenty.

The Crown is dramatizing the marriage and divorce between these star cross lovers and Charles is seen as a cad extraordinaire, while Diana is the hapless, betrayed sheep. The series depicts him as, “sneaking off to renew his love affair with Camilla Parker Bowles while the Princess is left crying at the Palace,” according to the Daily Mail.

Not so fast! One of the couple’s former security guards is sharing his first hand account of that time period and it differs from the narrative portrayed in The Crown.

According to Allan Peters, Charles did not stray with Camilla Parker Bowles (his current wife) until after he discovered Diana was having an affair with anther security guard, Barry Mannakee. Charles and Camilla met in their 20s and both have admitted to adultery, with Diana admitting to the same during her and Charles’ marriage.

Peters knows from which he speaks as he claims that he was the one who told Charles of Diana’s dalliance with his co-worker.

Peters, who worked for Diana for almost a decade, said, “The popular perception is that the Prince of Wales was straying all the way through his marriage — and that is definitely, unequivocally, not the case.”

In what could be considered blasphemy to Diana fans, he asserts that, “The first person that strayed was the Princess. He went back to see Mrs. Parker Bowles after he learned about her affair with Mannakee.”

Peters is not the only one telling this version of the truth. Jonathan Dimbleby’s 1994 authorized biography of Charles stated that Charles and Camilla renewed acquaintances in 1986; Mannakee started working for Diana in 1985. Their affair kicked off during a fishing expedition at Balmoral that year and in 1986 he was transferred from his royal position to the Diplomatic Protection Squad. A year later, “Mannakee was killed in a mysterious road accident … leading Diana to suggest he’d been ‘bumped off.’”

Peter told a CNN documentary, “I started to notice her behavior was unusual whenever we were anywhere near Mannakee, so I decided to talk to her about it … she categorically denied it. But then she told me exactly what was going on: she was having some sort of relationship with Mannakee.”

“The Prince of Wales approached me and said: “Why is the Princess behaving in the way she is? What on earth is the matter? I said: ‘You’ve got to talk to her.’ And he said: “Well, I’ve tried all that, and the only thing that seems to be upsetting her is that Barry Mannakee is going back to uniform. And, if she’s that upset, Barry can stay.”

“I was forced to say: “Well, Sir, if he stays, then I’m afraid I’ll have to leave.” And, I think, at that point the penny dropped. He was utterly shocked and was clearly very upset.”
