It’s been a long and painful wait for Outlander fans, but we finally have some good news! The wait is finally over! After a year of anticipation and speculation, Starz announced in December 2022 that the beloved historical drama will be returning for an extended 16-episode season in summer 2023.
This comes as welcome news to all those who were left hanging after last season was cut short due to COVID-19 protocols and star Caitriona Balfe’s maternity leave (she welcomed a baby boy with husband Tony McGill back in August 2021).
The four missing episodes from last season will now be part of this upcoming installment, giving us more Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall Fraser (Balfe) than ever before.

Sinéad O’Connor has taken on singing duties for this new installment’s opening titles theme song – making her rendition one we won’t soon forget.
The seventh novel by Diana Gabaldon, An Echo in the Bone, will serve as source material for this upcoming installment. However, due to last season’s abbreviated run, there may be details from A Breath of Snow and Ashes that were cut included here, too – so keep your eyes peeled!
In addition, the main series announced in January 2023 that it will be renewed for its eighth and final season after this seventh. Starz also recently announced that it has picked up Blood Of My Blood –a prequel following Jamie’s parents– which should make diehard fans even more excited about what’s coming down the pipeline.

What we didn’t expect was for Starz to announce some thrilling news about a few former cast members making an appearance in the upcoming season!
Graham McTavish, Lotte Verbeek, Steven Cree, Andrew Whipp, and Nell Hudson will all be reprising their roles as Dougal MacKenzie (Jamie’s long-dead uncle), Geillis Duncan (Claire’s time-traveling frenemy/Young Ian’s one-time captor), Ian (Young Ian’s dad/Jamie’s friend and brother-in-law), Brian Fraser (Jamie’s very long dead dad) and Laoghaire (Jamie’s vindictive ex-wife/Marsali’s mom). Layla Burns is also joining them as Marsali’s sister/Jamie’s stepdaughter Joan Mackimmie.
Not only do viewers get to see these beloved characters back on screen, but there are also several new faces set to appear this season, including Gloria Obianyo, who will portray Mercy Woodcock – described as “a free Black woman navigating the hardships of life in Colonial America.” As well as, Rod Hallett playing Benedict Arnold, the notorious “Revolutionary soldier turned traitor.”
This promises us an exciting mix of old favorites returning with new additions adding even more intrigue to this much-anticipated show! Come back here often for Outlander spoilers, news, and updates.
