“The Crown” has actually managed to wander into our modern times, exploring events that took place in the lives of several members of the the Royal Family twenty to thirty years ago. This deep dive into recent memory is unsettling some royal fans, but more than that is the uproar about the streaming giant bringing Diana’s final days to the big screen.
Another cause of controversies is the fact that “The Crown’s” writers are making up the storyline as they go to make it more dramatic while billing it as a historic retelling. Dame Judi Dench, 87, specifically wrote an open letter to the streamer to include a disclaimer in the series.
“The Crown’s” Season 5 Trailer Shows Rising Turmoil For the Royal Family
It is without a doubt that “The Crown” is one of Netflix’s best performing original shows, reaching more than a million households globally. Netflix is determined to grow the show’s audience by introducing a lot of dramatic dialogues and scenes, even if they aren’t always based on reality.
“No institution is beyond reproach,” said Staunton, 66, as the Queen, in the trailer’s opening lines, referencing a speech the late monarch gave to mark the 40th year of her reign over the United Kingdom. “And no member of it, either. 1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. It has turned out to be an annus horribillis.”
According to a source close to “The Crown’s” production, the Queen’s “annus horribilis” speech will be rewritten to include “the errors of the past”.
Speaking on “The Crown’s” upcoming fifth season, Staunton said: “It does start with people questioning, ‘Do we need the monarchy?’ ‘Do we need the Queen?’ And she has to ride that particular storm.”
Per a report by Netflix, the upcoming fifth season takes place at a time when criticisms of the monarchy was through the roof, and, according to Dominic West who plays Prince Charles in the series, there will be “great tensions”.
