Royal Family News: A Truly Horrible Year for Queen Elizabeth II

Royal Family news reveals that, per PEOPLE, the fifth season of The Crown is sure to ignite some bombshells for and around the Royal Family. From the tumultuous divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana to a devastating fire at Windsor Castle – viewers can expect to be on the edge of their seats for the duration.

After a two-year wait, Netflix viewers can now stream Season five starting on Wednesday, November 9. Much of the intense drama comes from the history books, with this fifth season covering the turbulent 1990s, a decade that would forever alter the royal terrain for the monarchy.

Prince Philip Befriends Penelope Knatchbull

In the second episode, Prince Phillip, played by Jonathan Pryce, befriends the wife of his godson, Norton Knatchbull, Lord Romsey. Penny Knatchbull, played by Natascha McElhone, and Charles connect following the untimely death of the former couple’s daughter Leonora, who passed away at age 5 from cancer.

The prince convinces Penny to join him in carriage driving as a sort of hobby to lift her spirits and even goes so far as to restore a four-in-hand carriage discovered at her home in Broadlands for her to that end. And, though the pair get along well, developing a friendship, Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) isn’t exactly happy that her husband befriended an attractive woman more than three decades his junior.

Princess Diana and Andrew Morton’s Book

Unsettled in her position as a royal, Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) agrees to open up for a book by Andrew Morton about the realities of her transition into the Royal Family. This was amid rumors that Prince Charles (Dominic West) was also the subject of an impending book.

In covert dance, Diana’s friend Dr. James Colthurst shuttles questions and answers back and forth between Morton and the princess to ultimately shed light on “the truth behind the fairytale.” The book, Diana: Her True Story, hit bookshelves in 1992 – the year she and Charles separated.

Fire at Windsor Castle

Staunton does a great job of conveying Queen Elizabeth’s despair when fire tears through Windsor Castle in 1992 – an event that contributed to the Queen declaring the year to be an “annus horribilis” – a horrible year.

The fire began on November 20 when a malfunctioning spotlight set a curtain ablaze in Queen Victoria’s chapel and then moved quickly to the Brunswick Tower, St. George’s Hall, and the surrounding private apartments. At the time, the New York Times reported that five staffers had suffered injuries due to the blaze.
