Apparently Netflix does not believe that their “The Crown” series will remain competitive much longer if they stayed true to the historical events involving the Royal Family, so they’ve started sprinkling a little bit of fiction to make it more dramatic.
This little sprinkle is riling some royal fans and those who are close to the Royal Family, leading several notable people to call out the series in recent days. These people range from actress Dame Judi Dench to former Prime Minister John Major.
Royal Expert Discusses the Impact “The Crown’s” Fifth Season Will Have On the Institution
The fifth season of “The Crown” is almost upon us and Netflix is dropping teaser videos and pictures to get fans interested. Already, the Netflix hit series has seen a backlash after one of their episodes suggested that Prince Charles once meant to pressure his mother to abdicate. Along with several aspects of the movie being a fictional retelling, fans are also angry that the historical drama will portray some sensitive moments, like Princess Diana’s final days.
But perhaps, the crowning moment of them all was changing the Queen’s history-making Annus Horribilis speech, which she gave following a series of painful mishaps that almost brought the institution crumbling to its knees. Writing for The Telegraph, Simon Heffer said of the upcoming season of “The Crown”:
“Indeed, the fourth episode concludes with Imelda Staunton, playing the late Queen, making the speech in which, shortly after the marital breakdowns of three of her four children and the burning down of part of Windsor Castle, she allowed herself a rare and entirely justified moment of public lamentation.”
He then noted that while the Annus Horribilis speech did indeed happen, “The Crown” writers have rewritten parts and changed the others to be able to keep their audience drooling at the screen. In this way, Heffer called the show “exploitative”.This is why Dame Judi Dench called on the series’ creators to preface each episode with a disclaimer that will remind viewers that the show is a fictional retelling of things that happened to real-life people.
Heffer continued: “In that sense, it is not only parasitical but exploitative, not just of its subjects, but also of some gullible members of its audience (especially outside Britain), who will believe that what they watch here is historical fact when it damned well isn’t.
“In that regard, possibly one of the most offensive scenes is the one between the then Prince of Wales and John Major, because it depicts the former especially as a scheming idiot. That scheming idiot is now our King and Head of State and, given the complete fiction of how he is seen to angle for his mother’s throne, he should sue for defamation of character, and put these weasels out of their tawdry business once and for all.”
Heffer went on to admit that even though Netflix has a lot of source materials – in the way of tabloid newspapers and magazine coverage – when it comes to Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ very public marriage breakdown, they cannot claim to know what’s happening indoors and how the Royal Family and Diana’s relatives handled the falling out.
