The Walking Dead doesn’t have a definitive ending. There are still plenty of stories left, according to AMC programming Chief Sarah Barnett. Ever since the comic books kicked off in 2003, The Walking Dead has become one of the most important and iconic shows in the new era of television.
The series is returning to AMC next month, which is also the final season of fan-favorite Michonne. The Walking Dead has already lost its share of characters in the past and that’s not going to slow down anytime soon.
Even though The Walking Dead has declined in ratings over the years, it’s still cultivated a dedicated fan base. But the show can only rely on the Commonwealth story following the Whisperer War. While it’s unclear how long the original series will remain on the air, it has spawned a series of spin-offs like Fear the Walking Dead. Fear the Walking Dead is still going strong and will return for its sixth season. It also spawned a new spin-off entitled The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which is set for release later this year.
AMC wants to keep The Walking Dead brand alive for as long as it can, according to ScreenRant. In a new interview with Variety, Barnett discussed the future of the series. She revealed that there are more stories to tell, even long after the comic books end. “I think there are a lot of stories to be told from this universe,” Barnett revealed. “And I would say about that what I’d say about any of the development at AMC – which is that it has to be creatively exceptional.”

In addition, chief content officer Scott M. Gimple does not see an end in sight for the series. He was also asked about the longevity of the AMC series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Gimple revealed if he saw a timetable for the show and how long it could go on for. He stated that “there isn’t a timetable. We’re continuing on. People are digging the show, and there’s a lot more story to tell,” Gimple said. “I’ve said it, Angela’s said it too, that last issue of the comic reads like a pilot. There’s a ton more story to tell. As long as the audience wants it, we would love to tell it.”
AMC is also working on a film starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, so there are plenty more stories to tell. However, will The Walking Dead brand survive without the original series? But it will have to end sometime soon. What are your thoughts? Sound off below in the comments section.
