The Young and the Restless star made Daytime Emmy history on Friday night when she became the first African-American actress in the awards’ 49-yr-history to win in the Outstanding Lead Actress category.
Mishael Morgan – Brings Home The Gold
Morgan had some stiff competition for the lead actress gold, including General Hospital’s Laura Wright and Cynthia Watros (Carly Corinthos and Nina Reeves), and Days of Our Lives’ Marci Miller and Arianne Zucker (Abigail DiMera and Nicole Walker). When Morgan’s name was called, she seemed in complete shock and then the announcer proclaimed she made Emmy history.
Morgan’s speech was heartwarming as she spoke about being born in Trinidad and all she conquered to get to this moment. She ended by talking about glass ceilings being broken and how she was proud to be an African-American woman breaking them.
“I was born on a tiny island in the Caribbean, and I’m now standing on an international stage and I am being honored regardless of the color of my skin, regardless of my passport, for being the best at what I do,” she said. “Now there are little girls around the world and no matter what the industry, the vocation … they can strive to be the best.”
Mishael – Morgan Wins For Heartbreaking Story
Morgan is a Y&R veteran who has been with the soap since 2013 playing Hilary Curtis, but in 2018 she couldn’t come to a contract agreement with the show so Hilary was killed. A year later, her heretofore-unheard-of twin Amanda Sinclair arrived in town and found her and Hilary’s birth family.

Scenes in which Amanda confronted her birth mother for giving her up and not wanting to acknowledge her earned Morgan her trophy. Recently, Amanda learned her mother, Naya Benedict (Ptosha Storey), who she has grown close to is sick. But her sister Imani Benedict (Leigh-Ann Rose) is trying to keep her from seeing their mother.
Amanda also became involved with Hilary’s widower Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), but not until his relationship with Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) ended. Of course, that ended because of Elena’s jealousy of Devon’s friendship with a woman that looks exactly like the late love of his life.
Whether Amanda and Devon end up together, in the end, remains to be seen, but so far, it seems to be smooth sailing for them. Perhaps a little more drama will win Mogan another Emmy nod next year. Stay tuned to The Young and the Restless weekdays to see what happens to Amanda Sinclair next.
