Friends Reunion Special Confirmed for HBO Max With Original Cast

The Friends reunion special has finally been confirmed for HBO Max. It will feature the original cast for an hourlong “unscripted” episode. The show has officially been greenlit by Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max. It will reunite all original six cast members unlike specials in the past. Friends just surpassed its 25th anniversary, but there was nothing lined up for the hit comedy until now.

The series first streamed on Netflix in 2015, which introduced a younger generation to the series. Ultimately, Netflix lost the rights to the show, and Warner Bros. announced that HBO Max would receive exclusive rights to the television show.

Friends was about a group of 20-somethings living in New York City. It centered around their careers, personal lives, and relationships, in which it involved the incredibly lavish apartments they shared and the coffee shop they frequented. There have been rumors of a Friends reunion ever since the show ended in 2004. But there were budget concerns, especially when it came to the cast’s salary. Original stars Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry have kept quiet about a possible Friends reunion until now.

According to a Deadline report, the entire cast is said to return to Stage 24, the same place where the original series was filmed. They will sit together for a one-hour, unscripted reunion special. Aside from the special, all 236 episodes of the sitcom will be available to subscribers on the first day of HBO Max. Each actor is reported to earn $4 million for appearing on the reunion special.

The actors will also serve as executive producers of the series along with the show’s creators David Crane, Kevin Bright, and Marta Kauffman. Ben Winston will also reprise his role as executive producer as well as director of the special. The Friends reunion special is also produced by FulWell 73, the same company behind The Late Late Show with James Corden, along with Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative Television.

Subscribers will have to pay $15 a month for the streaming service in order to get their Friends fix. HBO hopes that both new and old fans of the show will join the streaming service. The reunion special could also attract subscribers who don’t care about the old episodes but are curious to see what the cast will say. But are fans really here for the actors or the characters they portrayed on the show? The reunion special also won’t answer questions about what happened to the characters after the series finale. It just sounds like an actors’ roundtable.
