A frightening story about a Survivor contestant being badly injured during filming spread online. But there’s one important detail getting lost in some headlines and social media posts. In fact, it wasn’t the US version of the reality show hosted by Jeff Probst.

The Real Story

The accident involved Survivor Greece. Notably, it’s a separate version of the franchise that films in the Dominican Republic, per People.

According to many reports, 21-year-old contestant Stavros Floros suffered very bad injuries during a break in filming. It happened while he enjoyed some while spearfishing near Saona Island.

Official sources noted that a tourist boat passing by hit him with the propeller.

Actually, you might have seen images of whales and other marine mammals with those injuries. So, it’s not a huge surprise that a human would be seriously injured.

Serious Injuries

People noted that the injuries sound gruesome as the Greece Survivor contestant nearly didn’t survive. Reportedly, he ended up with his left leg almost amputated, and other serious injuries happened to his right ankle.

AcunMedya, who produce the show, confirmed that it didn’t happen during filming. Plus, the news arrived that immediate medical assistance and fast evacuation helped to save his life.

Later updates shared by the show and media outlets said he was conscious and in stable condition while recovering in intensive care.

Why Fans get Confused

Despite accurate reporting by outlets like People, Entertainment Weekly, Decider, and E! News, confusion arrived online after several sites used headlines referring to “Survivor” without clarifying it was the Greek edition of the show.

At first glance, readers scrolling quickly through social media could easily mistake the reports for news about the CBS version. Especially as not everyone clicks through to read the articles.

Easy To Get Confused

Some Reddit users pointed out how easily people confuse the franchise versions. In one old discussion about international editions of Survivor, a commenter wrote, “U.S. Survivor, you mean Survivor? Every other country was the spinoff.”

That kind of thinking likely added to the misunderstanding as the news spread online.

Suspended Filming

The Greek news outlet, SKAI TV reportedly suspended airing of Survivor Greece while authorities investigate exactly what happened. The network also said it would assist with Floros’ treatment and rehabilitation.

Like the American series, contestants compete in survival-based challenges while isolated in remote locations.

Why The Distinction Matters

The US version of Survivor did experience medical evacuations and injuries over the years, but this latest incident wasn’t during that particular show. And, it’s important for people to know the facts. After all, some folks believed it happened in the American production, which isn’t true.
